writer - Alan Jay Lerner
Brief - Jerry Mulligan is an American ex-GI who stays in post-war Paris to become a painter, and falls for the gamine charms of Lise Bouvier. However, his paintings come to the attention of Milo Roberts, a rich American heiress, who is interested in more than just art
An art house maven's dream. Overrated, overpraised, overdone; a pretentious melange that not only did not deserve Best Picture of 1951 on its own merits, it was dwarfed by the competition from the start. Place in the Sun, Detective Story, Streetcar Named Desire, Abbott and Costello Meet the Invisible Man; you name it, if it came out in '51, it's better than this arthouse crapola. The closing ballet is claptrap for the intellectual crowd, out of place and in the wrong movie. Few actors in their time were less capable (at acting) or less charismatic than Kelly and Caron. My #12 Worst of '51 (I saw 201 movies) and among the 5 worst Best Picture Oscar winners.
Oh, shit! I wish I could do the Chaplin like Kelly. First, the Overture. Yes. Yes, the strings. Listen carefully, can you hear it? Now the brass... When I heard this performed by our local symphony, the conductor introduced it as America's classical national anthem.
My wife's all time favorite piece of music is this Gershwin classic. Is there a vinyl pressing that stands out over all the others? I know this is super common and there hundreds of versions, but want to get her a primo version. Let me know if you have a recommendation! level 1 We have a great sounding version as part of Franklin Mint’s 100 greatest recordings of all time series from the 70’s. Don’t think it goes for too much, and it’s a deep red translucent vinyl in a beautiful box. Look it up and get back to me if you can’t find it, and I’ll provide more info when I get home. level 2 Never in a million years did I think I would come across another person who knows about this series, let alone owns even a part of the series. I inherited all 50 releases from my grandpa (with two duplicates due to damage during shipping that they replaced free of charge), my only gripe is that the boxes are an unusual size, which makes storing them a challenge (too tall for any Ikea storage solutions). I’ve yet to have sat down and listened to them all, but it’s a high priority! level 1 Get the original. Columbia Masterworks Leonard Bernstein. Get the earliest pressing you can find in the best condition you can find. It was a huge seller in its time so you can probably find it for $10 or less on Discogs. level 1 Just checked- it’s Leonard Bernstein with The New York Philharmonic level 1 Check Steve Hoffman’s forums too... I usually search over there if I have a question on pressings.
@suzanneetmoi Thank you for a wonderful defense of my favorite classic actor. Level 1 Love the colors, too bad it's fake since, as a parisian, I can confirm that the sun does not exist here. Rain is the only weather. level 2 Was there the past two weeks and can confirm the sun doesn’t exist. Weird day on valentine’s tho! level 1 are those nike sb team sports? look fire bro. level 2 Yep! Killshots on a budget haha. If it means what I think it means you better get the fuck off this post real quick. Somebody actually gave this a "one" for a rating. A movie with incredible dancing, the music of Gershwin, the premier of Leslie Caron, and some of the most interesting graphic stuff for its time. I always preferred the dancing of Fred Astaire to that of Gene Kelley, but that's no indictment of him. I do admit he is a bit stiff as an actor, but this movie is a way of providing us with a visual presentation of Gershwin's amazing music. Like so many of the musicals of its time, it is short on plot. The characters are contrived and put there to sing and dance. Still, put that aside and enjoy the moment. Take a look at the musical choices. The Gershwins are the American masters. If all that was written was "Rhapsody in Blue" it would George immortal.
Critics Consensus The plot may be problematic, but such concerns are rendered superfluous by Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron's star power, the Gershwins' classic songs, and Vincente Minnelli's colorful, sympathetic direction. 96% TOMATOMETER Total Count: 67 79% Audience Score User Ratings: 26, 427 An American in Paris Ratings & Reviews Explanation An American in Paris Photos Movie Info Gene Kelly does his patented Pal Joey bit as Jerry Mulligan, an opportunistic American painter living in Paris' "starving artists" colony. He is discovered by wealthy Milo Roberts (Nina Foch), who becomes Jerry's patroness in more ways than one. Meanwhile, Jerry plays hookey on this setup by romancing waif-like Lise Bouvier (Leslie Caron) -- who, unbeknownst to him, is the object of the affections of his close friend Henri (Georges Guetary), a popular nightclub performer. (The film was supposed to make Guetary into "the New Chevalier. " It didn't. ) The thinnish plot is held together by the superlative production numbers and by the recycling of several vintage George Gershwin tunes, including "I Got Rhythm, " "'S Wonderful, " and "Our Love Is Here to Stay. " Highlights include Guetary's rendition of "Stairway to Paradise"; Oscar Levant's fantasy of conducting and performing Gershwin's "Concerto in F" (Levant also appears as every member of the orchestra); and the closing 17-minute "American in Paris" ballet, in which Kelly and Caron dance before lavish backgrounds based on the works of famed French artists. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Rating: G Genre: Directed By: Written By: In Theaters: Oct 4, 1951 wide On Disc/Streaming: Apr 27, 1999 Runtime: 115 minutes Studio: MGM Cast Critic Reviews for An American in Paris Audience Reviews for An American in Paris An American in Paris Quotes Movie & TV guides.
I dug out from my garage some old musicals and this is another one of my favorites. It was written by Jay Alan Lerner and directed by Vincent Minelli. It won two Academy Awards for Best Picture of 1951 and Best Screenplay. The story of an American painter in Paris who tries to make it big. Nina Foch is a sophisticated lady of means and is very interested in helping him, but soon finds she loves the guy. Meanwhile Gene Kelly falls for lovely damsel, Leslie Caron. His main dancing partner, and I must say they are fantastic together on the floor and otherwise. Famous French singer Georges Guietary sings, too. So if you like good smooth dancing and fun filled scenes filled with Oscar Levant's nimble piano fingers, the songs of George Gershwyn will live on forever in this colorful gem. 8/10.
I don't know how many times I've watched this, as much for the music as for the conductor, a stunning and electrifying performance.
Any musical piece with the name “Rhapsody” is definitely a masterpiece
4:19 just shows how much balance, strength, and pure skill Gene Kelly had. I was looking for lil uzi and ended uphere. This song finally enters the public domain on Wednesday.
